Needlepoint Shops in Northern New Jersey

Two shops, one in Wyckoff and one in Summit, both about an hour from Manhattan.

Northern New Jersey is commuter country for New York, and it has the traditional tastes that usually come with that. Two shops serve it, one in Wyckoff up in Bergen County and one in Summit, about forty minutes apart and each an hour or so from Manhattan.

They are not the same kind of shop. Ridgewood Needlepoint does needlepoint and nothing else. Wool & Grace is a knitting shop with a genuine needlepoint department attached. Which one suits you depends on whether you want depth or company.

Pins and Needles in Princeton comes up in search results and is worth saying plainly: the shop has closed. The owner still paints canvases and takes needlepoint work, but there is no longer a storefront near Palmer Square to walk into.

If you are in Princeton or central New Jersey, the two shops above are both an hour or more north. Depending on where you are, Philadelphia and the Main Line may be the shorter drive.

Before you go

• Friday evening in Summit. Wool & Grace closes at 4pm and reopens 5:30pm to 7:30pm, which is the only evening opening in the region.
• Ridgewood keeps short days. Ten to two, Tuesday to Saturday. No appointment needed, but there is not much of a window.
• The name is not the town. Ridgewood Needlepoint is in Wyckoff, a few minutes north of Ridgewood itself.
• Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.

FAQ

Is there a needlepoint shop in Short Hills or Montclair?

Not one we have been able to confirm. Wool & Grace in Summit is the closest to Short Hills, about ten minutes away, and it is the nearest of the two to Montclair as well.

What happened to Pins and Needles in Princeton?

It has closed as a shop. The owner still custom paints canvases and does needlepoint work, but there is no storefront. Central New Jersey has no walk-in needlepoint shop we can point you to.

Is Wool & Grace a yarn shop or a needlepoint shop?

Both, and the yarn side is bigger. They carry a real selection of canvases and threads rather than a token shelf, so it counts, but if you want a shop that thinks about nothing but needlepoint, that is Wyckoff.

Would I do better going into Manhattan?
