Needlepoint Shops on Long Island

Four shops across about sixty-six miles, from Merrick and Locust Valley out to the Hamptons.

The four Long Island shops on this page are spread across about sixty-six miles of it. Two are in Nassau County, about fifteen miles apart: The Needlepaint Nook in Merrick and The Red Thread Atelier in Locust Valley, each about twenty-two or twenty-three miles east of Midtown Manhattan. Keep Me In Needlepoint is about twenty-five miles further east, in Lake Ronkonkoma, and the fourth is out in the Hamptons.

The Nassau pair make one trip. Of the four, the Merrick shop has been open for over fifty years, by its own account, the Locust Valley one opened in 2023, one is in Lake Ronkonkoma, and one in Water Mill that moved there from Sag Harbor in August 2026.

Which one to go to

Distance decides most of it. Merrick to Water Mill is about sixty-six miles in a straight line, so pick by where you are starting from: The Needlepaint Nook for Merrick and the south of Nassau County, The Red Thread Atelier for the North Shore, Keep Me In Needlepoint for western Suffolk County, and The Splendid Stitch for the East End.

After work, go to The Needlepaint Nook on a Thursday, when it stays open until 6pm, the latest of the four.

Classes at The Splendid Stitch

Its beginner class suits anyone self-taught or out of practice too. It lasts an hour and a half, takes up to six people aged 15 and up, and the kit includes a hand-painted canvas, the threads and tools, and a leather eyeglass case to finish the piece in. Visiting teachers come in for classes in beading, ribbon, embellishment and finishing your own ornaments. The Stitch Lab is a monthly class on Zoom that runs for a year, with the threads and a canvas mailed out each month. Classes and the fall retreat are both booked through its website.

Before you go

• None of the four opens on a Sunday or a Monday. Wednesday to Saturday is the window that covers all of them, and only the Splendid Stitch adds a Tuesday.
• The Hamptons shop has moved. Older listings and GPS directions still point to 11 Bridge Street in Sag Harbor. It is now at 103 Hayground Road, Building 1, in Water Mill.
• Drive to 50 Johnston Place in Merrick. The Needlepaint Nook's site gives it as the GPS address for the shop at 2110 Merrick Mall.
• Type the Locust Valley address in yourself. When we checked in September 2026, the directions button on The Red Thread Atelier's own Locust Valley page pointed to its shop in Sarasota. The address its page prints is 43 The Plaza, Locust Valley.
• Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.

FAQ

Is there really only one needlepoint shop in the Hamptons?

One we can confirm, yes. The Splendid Stitch has been in the Hamptons for about three years, in Sag Harbor until August 2026 and in Water Mill since, and its owner says it opens year round rather than for the season.

Is there a shop in Garden City, Huntington, or Manhasset?

Not one we can confirm in those towns. From the middle of Garden City, The Needlepaint Nook is about six and a half miles southeast. From Manhasset, The Red Thread Atelier is about eight miles northeast. From Huntington, The Red Thread Atelier is about ten miles west and Keep Me In Needlepoint about fifteen miles east.

Can I see more than one in a day?

The two Nassau shops are about fifteen miles apart, and both are open from Wednesday to Saturday. Keep Me In Needlepoint is about twenty-five miles from either, and The Splendid Stitch about forty-two miles beyond it, all measured in a straight line.

Is The Red Thread Atelier the same as the one in Sarasota?

Yes. The same business runs both, and the Florida shop is on our Sarasota page.

Is there a needlepoint shop in Manhattan?

Three, on our New York City page: two on the Upper East Side and one in the West Village. The Nassau shops are about twenty-two and twenty-three miles east of Midtown in a straight line.
