Needlepoint Shops on Long Island

Two shops seventy miles apart, one fifty years old in Merrick and one new in the Hamptons.

Long Island's two needlepoint shops are about seventy miles apart and could hardly be less alike. The Needlepaint Nook has been in Merrick for fifty years. The Splendid Stitch opened recently in Water Mill and is the only needlepoint shop in the Hamptons.

That gap is the whole story of the island in one sentence. Nassau County has the old shop with the long memory, and the East End has the new one, and there is very little in between.

Nassau County

The Needlepaint Nook

2110 Merrick Mall, Merrick, NY 11566
(516) 623-0250
Wednesday 10:30am to 5pm, Thursday 12:30pm to 6pm, Friday 10:30am to 5pm, Saturday 10:30am to 2:30pm
theneedlepaintnook.com

Fifty years on the south shore of Nassau County, with hand-painted canvases, premium threads, and finishing and framing done for you. Customers in their own reviews talk about coming back after thirty-five years.

Their site gives a second address for satnavs, 50 Johnston Place, because the mall address does not always route correctly. Use that one to drive to.

The Hamptons

The Splendid Stitch

103 Hayground Road, Building 1, Water Mill, NY 11976
Tuesday to Saturday 10:30am to 4:30pm
thesplendidstitch.com

The only needlepoint shop in the Hamptons, newly opened on Hayground Road in Water Mill, with a curated canvas range, more than a hundred threads, classes, and trunk shows.

No phone is published on their site. For a shop this new it is worth checking hours before driving out from town, particularly outside the season.

Which end of the island

This is not a region you tour. Merrick to Water Mill is well over an hour in good traffic and considerably more on a summer Friday, so pick the one nearer to you and stay there.

The Needlepaint Nook is the one for range and for finishing. Fifty years in one place, hand-painted canvases, premium threads, and framing and finishing done for you. Their own reviews include customers who first came in thirty-five years ago.

The Splendid Stitch is the East End answer, and until it opened there was not one. A curated canvas range, over a hundred threads, classes, and trunk shows, on Hayground Road just off the Montauk Highway.

FAQ

Is there really only one needlepoint shop in the Hamptons?

Yes, and it is recent. The Splendid Stitch in Water Mill is the only one, which is surprising for an area of that wealth and that many summer houses. Before it opened the nearest was a long drive west.

Is there a shop in Garden City, Huntington, or Manhasset?

Not one we have been able to confirm. The Needlepaint Nook in Merrick is the closest to most of Nassau County, on the south shore.

Can I do both in one day?

You can, but we would not. It is seventy miles between them, and the Long Island Expressway on a summer weekend turns that into most of a day. Choose the end you are on.

Would Manhattan be easier?

From western Nassau, quite possibly. Our New York City page covers two shops on the Upper East Side, both reachable on the train.

New to needlepoint?

If you are heading to one of these shops for the first time, it helps to know roughly what you are looking at before you walk in.
