Needlepoint Shops in New York City

Four shops in Manhattan: two on the Upper East Side, eleven blocks apart, one in the West Village, and Penny Linn on Tenth Avenue.

We can confirm four needlepoint shops in New York City, all in Manhattan. Two are on the Upper East Side: Annie & Co., on the southwest corner of 92nd Street and 2nd Avenue, about two and a half miles northeast of Midtown, and Rita's Needlepoint, founded in 1973, on East 81st Street, eleven blocks south. West Village Knit & Needle is on West 10th Street in the West Village, about two miles southwest of Midtown, and Penny Linn, a needlepoint store and canvas brand from Rowayton, Connecticut, is on Tenth Avenue, about a mile west of Midtown.

The Upper East Side pair are about 0.5 miles apart, so they make one visit, and West Village Knit & Needle is about four miles from Rita's and about a mile south of Penny Linn. All four open seven days a week for most of the year.

Which one to go to

On a Tuesday evening, go to Rita's Needlepoint, open until 8pm, and on a Wednesday evening to West Village Knit & Needle, open until 7pm. On any evening but Sunday, Penny Linn is open until 7pm. Annie & Co. closes at 6pm on weekdays.

On a Sunday in summer, go to Rita's, open from 11am to 4pm, West Village Knit & Needle, from noon to 5pm, or Penny Linn, from 10am to 6pm. Annie & Co. closes on Sundays until after Labor Day.

Downtown, go to West Village Knit & Needle, on West 10th Street. On the West Side, go to Penny Linn, on Tenth Avenue.

If you knit as well, Annie & Co. and West Village Knit & Needle both sell yarn beside their needlepoint, and both finish knitting too.

• Take the Q. Annie & Co.'s own directions give the Q to 96th Street and 2nd Avenue, and Rita's is about 0.1 miles from the 83rd Street entrance of the Q's 86th Street station. The M15 bus on 2nd Avenue stops in front of Annie & Co., by its own account. West Village Knit & Needle is about 0.1 miles from the 1 train's Christopher Street station.
• Write to Penny Linn before you go. Its stores have no phone numbers, so questions go through its site.
• Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.

Is there a needlepoint shop downtown, in Brooklyn, or on the Upper West Side?

Downtown, yes: West Village Knit & Needle, on West 10th Street. In Brooklyn and on the Upper West Side, not one we have been able to confirm; on the West Side, Penny Linn is on Tenth Avenue, about a mile west of Midtown. Across the Hudson, our Northern New Jersey page has a shop in Hoboken, about two and a half miles west of Midtown, and one in Jersey City.

How old is Rita's?

Rita Klein founded it in 1973, and it has had several homes on the Upper East Side since, by its own account. She retired in 2019, and the shop is now owned by Alyssa Hertzig.

Can I learn here as a beginner?

Yes. West Village Knit & Needle holds Learn How To Needlepoint classes, an hour and a half each with the materials included, Annie & Co. offers classes and one-on-one help, and Penny Linn's events calendar lists stitch nights and classes at its store.

Which of them do finishing?

Three of the four. Penny Linn does not take finishing, though its site keeps a directory of finishers. Rita's finishes pieces from ornaments and eyeglass cases to belts, purses, and footstools, Annie & Co. finishes needlepoint and knitting, and West Village Knit & Needle finishes needlepoint, knitting, and crochet, from ornaments and stockings to belts and pillows.
