Needlepoint Shops in Washington DC and Northern Virginia

Two shops, one in the District on MacArthur Boulevard and one out in Alexandria.

The capital region has fewer needlepoint shops than its size suggests, and they are not where you would guess. Neither is downtown. One is out on MacArthur Boulevard in the Palisades, and the other is in Alexandria, well south of the city.

We looked at Baltimore too and found it thinner than expected. The best-known needlework shop there specializes in counted cross stitch rather than needlepoint, which is a different craft with different materials. The two below are the ones we can send you to for canvases.

A note on Baltimore

Search results will offer you Baltimore shops, and some of them are good shops. They are mostly counted cross stitch, and one is a yarn store. Neither carries the hand-painted canvases or the fiber range a needlepoint project needs.

Before you go

• Both keep short afternoons. The Point of It All closes at 4pm and In Stitches at 3pm, so neither works after a normal working day.
• In Stitches opens six days. It is the only one of the two open on a Monday, which is useful if your week does not bend.
• Parking on MacArthur Boulevard is easy. That is not a sentence you can write about much of Washington, and it makes the Palisades shop less of an expedition than it sounds.

Is there a needlepoint shop in downtown DC, Georgetown, or Capitol Hill?

Not a dedicated one. The Point of It All on MacArthur Boulevard is the closest to the middle of the city, about ten minutes west of Georgetown.

What about Bethesda, Chevy Chase, or Arlington?

Nothing we have been able to confirm as a needlepoint shop. The Point of It All is the nearest to Bethesda and Chevy Chase, just across the District line.

Is In Stitches a needlepoint shop or a cross stitch shop?

Both, honestly. It is a full-service needlework shop with a needlepoint department, and it does framing and finishing in house. If you want a needlepoint-only shop, the Washington one is that.

Where do I get finishing done in the DC area?

Both shops offer it, and In Stitches does its framing on site to museum standards. Read our finishing guide before you hand anything over, particularly the part about not trimming the canvas.
