Needlepoint Shops in Washington DC and Northern Virginia

Four shops: one in the District, one in Arlington, one south of Alexandria, and one out in Middleburg.

We can confirm four needlepoint shops in the capital region, and none of them is downtown. The Point of It All is on MacArthur Boulevard in the District, about four and a half miles northwest of downtown, and Waste Knot Needlepoint is on North Glebe Road in Arlington, about five miles west; the two are about two and a half miles apart, so they make one trip. In Stitches Needlework is south of Alexandria, in what it calls the historic Mount Vernon area, about thirteen miles southwest of downtown, and Stitch is on West Federal Street in Middleburg, about thirty-eight miles west.

Three of them keep daytime hours that end by 4pm. Stitch keeps the shortest week, from 4pm on Wednesday to Saturday, and also opens by appointment.

Which one to go to

On a Monday, go to Waste Knot Needlepoint or In Stitches Needlework, both open from Monday to Saturday. The Point of It All opens from Tuesday, and Stitch from Wednesday.

After work, Stitch in Middleburg on a Wednesday, open from 4pm to 7pm. The other three close by 4pm.

For a shop that sells needlepoint alone, The Point of It All, Waste Knot, or Stitch. In Stitches carries counted cross stitch as well.

For framing as well as finishing, In Stitches, which does both in its own department.

For Washington designs, The Point of It All keeps a collection of Washington, DC and travel canvases.

For a canvas painted to order, or a design changed, Stitch, which paints custom canvases and alters existing ones.

Before you go

• None of the four publishes Sunday hours. Stitch holds a Sunday afternoon stitch once a month, from 2pm to 4pm, with the date on its events page.

FAQ

Is there a needlepoint shop in downtown DC, Georgetown, or Capitol Hill?

Not one we can confirm. The Point of It All on MacArthur Boulevard is the nearest to Georgetown, about two and a half miles northwest of it, and Waste Knot Needlepoint is about three and a half miles west of it, in Arlington.

What about Arlington, Bethesda, or Chevy Chase?

Arlington has Waste Knot Needlepoint, about one and a half miles northwest of the middle of Arlington. We have not confirmed a shop in Bethesda or Chevy Chase; The Point of It All is about four and a half miles south of the middle of Bethesda and about four miles south of Chevy Chase.

Is there one near Leesburg or Ashburn?

Stitch, in Middleburg, is the nearest we list, about fourteen miles southwest of the middle of Leesburg and about fifteen miles west of the middle of Ashburn.

Is In Stitches a needlepoint shop or a cross stitch shop?

Both. It carries counted cross stitch and needlepoint, with framing and finishing done in its own department.

Where do I get finishing done in the DC area?

All four shops offer it. In Stitches finishes in its own department and also frames, and Waste Knot and Stitch each work with outside finishers. Read our finishing guide before you hand anything over, particularly the part about not trimming the canvas.

Is Stitch in Middleburg the same shop as STITCH in Louisville?

No. STITCH, on our Louisville page, is a separate business with the same name.

Is there a needlepoint shop in Baltimore or Annapolis?

Three, on our Baltimore page: Hillside Needle Arts in Stevenson, Sew Another Stitch in Havre de Grace, and Marcelline Daye in Annapolis. Marcelline Daye is about thirty-three miles east of The Point of It All, and Hillside about thirty-nine miles northeast.
