Needlepoint Shops in Richmond

Two shops in the western half of the city, about fifteen minutes apart.

Richmond keeps its needlepoint in the west end. Both shops sit out that way, about fifteen minutes apart along Patterson Avenue and Ridgefield Parkway, and neither is downtown. If you are coming from the Fan or Church Hill, plan a drive.

Virginia has a long needlework tradition and Richmond is where most of it is concentrated. The two shops split neatly: one is the older establishment closer in, the other is newer and further out toward Short Pump.

Which one to go to

It mostly comes down to which side of the city you start from, but there are real differences.

The Stitching Studio runs monthly trunk shows, which is the best way to see a designer's whole range in person rather than as thumbnails on a screen. It also runs a stitch-in over lunch on the third Thursday of each month, from 11am to 3pm, which is an unusually easy way to visit if you work nearby.

West End Needlepoint is the one with an evening. Wednesday runs to 7:30pm, and nothing else in Richmond opens late. It is also the closer of the two to Short Pump and the western suburbs.

Before you go

• Wednesday evening is the only late opening. West End stays open to 7:30pm, so that is the day to plan around if you cannot get out during working hours.
• Both are closed Sunday and Monday. The needlepoint week in Richmond runs Tuesday to Saturday, and Saturdays are short at both.
• Ask about the third Thursday. The Stitching Studio's lunchtime stitch-in is a low-commitment way to meet other stitchers if you are new to the city.
• Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.

Is there a needlepoint shop in downtown Richmond or Carytown?

Not a dedicated one. The Stitching Studio on Patterson Avenue is the closest to the middle of the city, about ten minutes west of Carytown.

Which is nearer to Short Pump?

West End Needlepoint, on Ridgefield Parkway. It is the newer of the two and it was placed out there deliberately, for the far west end.

Do either of them do finishing?

Both offer it. Ask what they send out and what they do themselves, and read our finishing guide first so you know what the costs and timelines look like.

Is there a shop in Williamsburg, Charlottesville, or Virginia Beach?
