Needlepoint Shops in Raleigh and the Triangle

Three shops across Raleigh and Chapel Hill, in a region where the needlepoint week starts on Wednesday.

The Triangle has three needlepoint shops, two in Raleigh and one in Chapel Hill, and between them they cover the range well. One is the second storefront of a national retailer, one is an independent studio in the north of the city, and one has been in Chapel Hill for decades.

Before anything else, look at the hours. Every one of these three is closed on Sunday and Monday, and the Raleigh pair are shut on Tuesday too unless you have made an appointment. The needlepoint week here effectively runs Wednesday to Saturday.

Raleigh

Needlepoint.Com

3811 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27607
(919) 828-5538
Wednesday 10am to 4pm, Thursday 10am to 7pm, Friday 10am to 4pm, closed Saturday to Tuesday
needlepoint.com

The Raleigh half of one of the largest needlepoint retailers in the country, out on Hillsborough Street. The same business runs the Broad Street shop on our Charleston page, so the range you can walk in and see is unusually wide.

Three opening days a week is the catch, Wednesday through Friday, with Thursday running to 7pm. That needs planning rather than passing by.

S & J Needleworks

3607 Falls River Avenue, Suite 123, Raleigh, NC 27614
(919) 526-4852
Wednesday and Friday 10am to 5pm, Thursday 10am to 7pm, Saturday 10am to 4pm, Tuesday by appointment
sandjneedleworks.com

Hand-painted canvases, threads, classes, and finishing, in a suite up in north Raleigh rather than on a shopping street. They run a long-form class program, so it is worth asking what is enrolling.

Tuesdays are by appointment if you call ahead, which is the one way to get unhurried help choosing fibers. Thursday runs to 7pm and Saturday to 4pm, which covers the days the other Raleigh shop is shut.

Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill Needlepoint

762-B Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Chapel Hill, NC 27514
(919) 929-3999
Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm, Saturday 10am to 2pm
chapelhillneedlepoint.com

A full-service shop in Midtown Market, sitting between a bookshop and a kitchen store on the old Airport Road. It has been at this address since the start of 2016.

The most conventional opening hours of the three, and the only one open on a Tuesday without an appointment. Chapel Hill is about half an hour west of Raleigh, so treat it as its own trip.

How the three fit together

They are less alike than three shops in one region usually are, and that works in your favor.

Needlepoint.Com is the deep inventory option, because it is the retail arm of a large online business. If you want to see a lot of canvases in one visit, start there, and note that it opens only three days a week.

S & J Needleworks is the teaching one, with a class program that runs in blocks rather than one-off sessions. The Tuesday appointment slot is the useful thing here if you want proper time at the counter.

Chapel Hill Needlepoint has the most normal hours and the longest history in one place, and it is far enough west to be a separate outing rather than a second stop.

FAQ

Why is everything closed at the start of the week?

Small shops staff the days people actually come in, and for needlepoint that is midweek and Saturday. It is common everywhere, and all three shops here follow it. Treat Wednesday to Saturday as the week here.

Is the Raleigh Needlepoint.Com the same business as the Charleston one?

Yes. It is the same retailer, and we have written up the Charleston shop separately. Being able to walk into a business that size is unusual, and there are only the two places you can do it.

Is there a needlepoint shop in Durham or Cary?

Not one we have been able to confirm. The two Raleigh shops are the closest to Cary, and Chapel Hill Needlepoint is the nearest to Durham at about twenty minutes.

Which one suits a beginner?

Any of them, but the appointment slot at S & J is the gentlest way in if you want someone's full attention. Failing that, go midweek rather than on a Saturday morning.

New to needlepoint?

If you are heading to one of these shops for the first time, it helps to know roughly what you are looking at before you walk in.

Further south? We have also written up Charleston and Atlanta, or search the map for anywhere else.
