Needlepoint Shops in Charleston

Two shops, one on Broad Street downtown and one out on James Island.

Charleston has two needlepoint shops, and they are very different places to walk into. One is the flagship store of a national needlepoint retailer, on Broad Street in the historic district. The other is a neighborhood shop on James Island that opened in 2024 and keeps an open stitch night every Thursday.

Between them the week is well covered. The Broad Street shop opens Tuesday to Saturday, and the James Island shop adds a Sunday late morning and a Thursday evening, so there is a way in for most working weeks.

Which one to go to

They suit different trips, so it mostly comes down to where you are staying and when you are free.

Needlepoint.Com at 141 Broad Street is the one for range. The company calls it its flagship and says it holds the largest selection of its two stores, and it offers classes and finishing there. It is the natural stop if you are already walking the historic district, but its days are short: Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm.

Lowcountry Needlepoint on Maybank Highway is the one for company and for awkward schedules. It opens six days, including Sunday from 11am to 2pm, and stays open until 7pm on Thursdays, when anyone can bring a project to the open stitch night from 5pm. Its beginner class sends you home with a canvas, thread, stretcher bars and scissors, and decorative stitch classes follow on from there.

What became of Cabbage Row

The Broad Street store has deeper local roots than its name suggests. In February 2022 Needlepoint.Com bought Cabbage Row Needlepoint Shoppe, which had been a fixture of the historic district for more than forty years. Cabbage Row took its name from the row of buildings at 89 to 91 Church Street. If you shopped there, this is where it went.

Also worth knowing

Southern Stitch Co. in Mount Pleasant sells needlepoint but operates online and as a traveling shop rather than from a storefront. Worth following if you are east of the Cooper, since a pop-up may come closer to you than either shop above.

Before you go

• Use 141 Broad Street. A 2022 post on Needlepoint.Com's own blog gives 13 Broad Street, and older listings may too. The address on its stores page now is 141.
• Parking downtown is the hard part. Broad Street is in the historic district, so plan for a garage rather than expecting to pull up outside.
• Thursday is the late one. Lowcountry Needlepoint runs to 7pm, with the open stitch night from 5pm. Nothing else in the region is open past four.
• Sunday means James Island. Lowcountry Needlepoint opens 11am to 2pm, and the Broad Street shop is closed. Neither opens on a Monday.
• Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.

Lowcountry Needlepoint holds an open stitch night every Thursday from 5pm to 7pm, for every level. Bring a project, or start something new there. Needlepoint.Com lists in-person events at its stores on a calendar on its site.

Is there a needlepoint shop in Mount Pleasant or Summerville?

Not one we have been able to confirm. Southern Stitch Co. serves Mount Pleasant online and through traveling pop-ups, and the two shops above are the ones you can walk into.

Can I find Charleston designs to stitch?

Yes. Needlepoint.Com's Charleston shop has sold kits of Rainbow Row, the Pineapple Fountain and St. Michael's, along with a series of the city's historic houses. Designs come and go, so ask what is in when you visit. A canvas of a place you have been makes a better souvenir than most, since you finish it yourself.
