Two shops under a mile apart, one on the Downtown Mall and one in McIntire Plaza, and between them one is open every day.
Charlottesville has two needlepoint shops we can confirm, under a mile apart. Magpie Knits is on the Downtown Mall, and Poppypointe is just north in McIntire Plaza.
They are different kinds of shop. Poppypointe is a needlepoint shop, and Magpie Knits is a yarn shop that carries needlepoint canvases and opens seven days a week.

A needlepoint shop with original canvases, a wide variety of threads, and finishing, plus private lessons, drop-in embellishment consultations, custom stitching, and visiting teachers.
Open stitching runs on Wednesdays from 5pm to 7pm and Saturdays from 10am to noon, and a stitching support session on the first and third Sundays from noon to 2pm. It is at the end of the Allied Street cul-de-sac, in the one-story building with solar panels on the roof.

A yarn shop first, in its own words a knitting and crocheting home, that also carries a large selection of needlepoint canvases, with classes for knitters and a range of linens and gifts.
On the Downtown Mall. The shop validates two hours of free garage parking on weekdays, and garage parking is free on weekends.
Which one to go to
On a Monday, go to Magpie Knits, the one of the two open that day. On Sundays Magpie opens until 2pm, and Poppypointe holds a stitching session on the first and third Sundays of the month.
For finishing, lessons, or help choosing threads for a canvas, go to Poppypointe.
For an evening, go to Poppypointe on a Wednesday, when it stays open until 7pm, with open stitching from 5pm.
Before you go
- Both make one trip. They are under a mile apart, measured in a straight line.
- Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.

Can I get a finished piece made up?
Poppypointe offers finishing. Magpie Knits does not mention finishing on its site, so ask there.
Is Richmond worth the trip too?
