Needlepoint Shops in the San Francisco Bay Area

Seven shops: two in San Francisco, one in Ross in Marin, one across the bay in Alameda, two down the peninsula in Burlingame and Menlo Park, and one in Morgan Hill, south of San Jose.

Of the seven Bay Area needlepoint shops we can confirm, two are in San Francisco, one is in Ross in Marin, one is across the bay in Alameda, two are down the peninsula, and one is in Morgan Hill, south of San Jose. Needlepoint Inc in Jackson Square and Golden Gate Needlepoint on Sacramento Street are each about one and a half miles from City Hall, to the northeast and the west. Cali Stitch Needlepoint is on Ross Common, about fifteen miles northwest, and Needle In A Haystack is on Mariner Square Loop in Alameda, about seven and a half miles east. City Needlework in Burlingame is about fourteen miles south, Old World Designs in Menlo Park about twenty-six miles southeast, and Stitched Up Needleworks in Morgan Hill about sixty miles southeast.

The hours decide more than the map. Of the six that publish hours, Stitched Up Needleworks is the one open on a Sunday, Needlepoint Inc opens on weekdays only, and Cali Stitch stays open until 7pm on Thursdays.

Which one to go to

On a Saturday, every shop here that publishes hours is open except Needlepoint Inc. City Needlework, Cali Stitch, and Stitched Up Needleworks stay open until 5pm; Old World Designs and Needle In A Haystack close at 4pm.

On a Sunday, go to Stitched Up Needleworks in Morgan Hill, from 10am to 5pm.

After 4pm, go to City Needlework, Cali Stitch, or Stitched Up, all open until 5pm; to Cali Stitch on a Thursday, until 7pm; or to Old World Designs on the first or third Wednesday of the month, when it stays open until 8pm for a stitch-in.

For silk thread made for the shop, go to Needlepoint Inc, which sells its own line.

To stitch in company, go to Old World Designs on a Friday, from 10am.

For cross stitch and counted work as well as needlepoint, go to Needle In A Haystack, whose fabrics and threads are its specialty.

Before you go

• Call Golden Gate Needlepoint first. It has no website of its own and we found no hours from the shop, so its address and phone number come from a retailer directory published by the thread makers Tilli Tomas and Planet Earth Fiber.
• Book Stitched Up Needleworks for a Tuesday. It opens from Wednesday to Sunday, and on Tuesdays by appointment only.
• City Needlework is upstairs. It is Suite 202B, on the second floor inside The Landmark.
• Needle In A Haystack is not in the shopping center. It is in a small office complex two blocks from Alameda Landing; look for the tall redwoods.
• Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.

How far apart are the shops?

The two in the city are about two and a half miles apart, and Needle In A Haystack is about six and a half miles east of Needlepoint Inc, across the bay. Cali Stitch is about thirteen miles northwest of Golden Gate Needlepoint. City Needlework is about fifteen miles south of the city shops, Old World Designs about thirteen miles beyond City Needlework, and Stitched Up Needleworks about thirty-six miles southeast of Old World Designs.

Is there a needlepoint shop in the East Bay or the South Bay?

Yes, one in each. In the East Bay, Needle In A Haystack in Alameda is about three miles west of the middle of Oakland. In the South Bay, Stitched Up Needleworks in Morgan Hill is about thirteen miles southeast of the middle of San Jose; Old World Designs is about twenty-three miles northwest of the middle of San Jose.

Is there one in Marin?

Yes. Cali Stitch Needlepoint is on Ross Common in Ross, about 0.4 miles southeast of the middle of Ross, about three miles southwest of the middle of San Rafael, and about three and a half miles north of the middle of Mill Valley.

Which is nearest to Palo Alto or San Mateo?

Old World Designs is about four and a half miles northwest of the middle of Palo Alto. City Needlework is about two and a half miles northwest of the middle of San Mateo.

Can I learn here as a beginner?

Yes. Needlepoint Inc invites beginners in to learn a basic stitch; Old World Designs holds group lessons for beginners on set dates as well as private lessons; City Needlework lists needlepoint classes; Needle In A Haystack offers private lessons, needlepoint among them; Cali Stitch welcomes beginners and holds classes; and Stitched Up Needleworks lists classes with several teachers.

Which of them do finishing?

Needlepoint Inc takes finishing in the shop or by mail, City Needlework finishes pieces from ornaments to stand-ups, Old World Designs sends work to the fabricators it works with, and Needle In A Haystack arranges finishing through a local finisher.
