Needlepoint Shops in the San Francisco Bay Area
Four shops down the peninsula, two in the city and two south of it, and between them they keep every day of the week except Sunday.
The Bay Area has four needlepoint shops we can confirm, and they line up neatly down the peninsula. Two are in San Francisco, in Jackson Square and Presidio Heights. The other two are south of the city, in Burlingame and Menlo Park.
This is a more comfortable region than Los Angeles, where the shops sit at opposite ends of a city nobody wants to cross twice. San Francisco to Menlo Park is about thirty miles straight down the 101.

In Jackson Square, and the oldest of the four: over twenty-seven years in the city. Exclusive hand-painted canvases, its own line of silk threads, and designs and threads from other makers.
Weekdays only. It is the one shop in the region that closes on Saturday, which makes it the awkward one to fit around a job and the easy one to reach on a weekday lunch break.
No phone number is published on their website, so we have not printed one. Email or the contact form is the way in.
Golden Gate Needlepoint

On Sacramento Street in Presidio Heights, carrying hand-painted canvases and a wide thread range: silk, silk and wool blends, wool, and pearl cotton.
The shop does not appear to run a website of its own, and the address in most directories points somewhere else entirely. The address and phone number here come from the retailer directory published by Tilli Tomas and Planet Earth Fiber, whose threads it stocks.
We have not printed opening hours because we cannot find any we trust. Call before you go.

Canvases, threads and finishing, on the second floor of the Landmark building on Burlingame Avenue. Opened by someone who used to work at Needlepoint Inc in the city.
The longest opening in the region and the only one that runs to 5pm, six days a week. If the city shops keep closing before you can get to them, this is the answer.
It is Suite 202B, so it is upstairs rather than a shop window on the avenue.

A full-service shop on Santa Cruz Avenue in downtown Menlo Park: hand-painted canvases, fibers, classes and finishing. The furthest south of the four and the obvious one from the peninsula or the South Bay.
Six days a week, and it also does mail order and curbside pickup, which is worth knowing if you are passing through rather than staying.
The hours are the hard part
Every shop here closes early, and between them they manage to cover almost every day badly.
Needlepoint Inc is weekdays only. Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, closed both weekend days. It is the oldest shop in the region, over twenty-seven years in the city, and the only one you cannot get to on a Saturday.
City Needlework in Burlingame runs Monday to Saturday until 5pm, which is both the longest day and the fullest week in the region. If everything else keeps shutting before you can get there, go here.
Old World Designs in Menlo Park is Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, and also does mail order and curbside pickup.
Golden Gate Needlepoint we cannot give hours for at all, which is explained below.
About Golden Gate Needlepoint
This one is worth a paragraph of its own. It is a real shop on Sacramento Street with a good reputation and a deep thread wall, and it appears not to run a website.
Most directories list a website for it that turns out to belong to an unrelated events publication, and their opening hours vary from listing to listing. So we have printed the address and phone number, which come from the retailer directory published by Tilli Tomas and Planet Earth Fiber, whose threads the shop stocks, and we have printed no hours at all.
That is deliberate. We would rather leave a field blank than fill it with something we cannot stand behind. Call before you go.
Before you go
- Nowhere is open on a Sunday. Not one of the four. Plan for Saturday at the latest.
- Needlepoint Inc is closed Saturdays too. It is the weekday shop. Everything else in the region is the opposite.
- Two of the four are upstairs. City Needlework is Suite 202B in the Landmark building, and neither it nor Needlepoint Inc is a shop window you will spot from the sidewalk.
- Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.
FAQ
Which shop should I go to first?
City Needlework in Burlingame if you want the best chance of it being open, Needlepoint Inc if you are in the city on a weekday and want the deepest history. Old World Designs if you are already down the peninsula.
Is there anything in the East Bay or the South Bay?
Not that we have been able to confirm. Menlo Park is the southernmost shop we can stand behind, and we have found nothing in Oakland, Berkeley or San Jose that meets our bar. If you know of one, tell us and we will check it.
Why is there no website listed for Golden Gate Needlepoint?
Because we could not find one that is actually theirs. The address several directories give leads to an unrelated site. Rather than send you somewhere wrong, we have left it blank.
Can I do all four in a day?
On a weekday, in theory, if you start at Needlepoint Inc and work south. In practice the 101 and the four o'clock closing times will beat you. Two in a day is comfortable.
