Needlepoint Shops in Los Angeles

Three shops spread across the basin, from Santa Monica to the San Gabriel Valley, and none of them much like the others.

Los Angeles has three needlepoint shops we can confirm, and they are spread right across the basin. Aristeia is in Santa Monica, near the ocean. A Stitch In Time is in San Marino and Abuelita's is in South Pasadena, both of them in the San Gabriel Valley, twenty-odd miles inland.

The shape of it is the opposite of somewhere like Rhode Island. Three shops, three quite different businesses, and a drive between the ends of it that no one would attempt twice in a day.

Treat this as two trips, not one. Santa Monica to San Marino crosses the entire city, and the freeway that connects them is the 10. Anyone who has driven it will already be nodding.

Aristeia Needlepoint is the destination shop, and the one most stitchers mean when they talk about needlepoint in Los Angeles. Hand-painted canvases from a long roster of designers, a deep thread range, finishing, and a weekly class schedule. It also stays open latest: Monday runs to 8pm, which is later than anywhere else we have found in the basin.

A Stitch In Time Needlework in San Marino is the steadiest of the three for opening hours. Monday to Friday until 5pm and Saturday until 4pm, which is the fullest week in the region by a distance. It is a needlework shop rather than a needlepoint-only one, so the canvases share the floor with knitting.

Abuelita's Knitting & Needlepoint in South Pasadena is split down the middle, one side knitting and one side needlepoint, with hand-painted canvases, threads, and help with stitches and finishing. It is the only shop in the region open on a Sunday.

Making it work

San Marino and South Pasadena are the pair to combine. They are close together, both in the San Gabriel Valley, and their hours overlap comfortably in the middle of the day. That is a genuinely easy afternoon.

Santa Monica is its own trip. If you are coming from the valley side, go on a Monday and use the late opening, because arriving at Aristeia at 4pm having crossed the city at 3pm is a worse experience than it sounds.

Before you go

• Monday is the strange day. Aristeia is open until 8pm, A Stitch In Time keeps normal hours, and Abuelita's is closed. Check before you drive.
• Sunday is Abuelita's alone. It opens 12pm to 5pm and the other two are shut, so it is the only option for a weekend afternoon.
• Do not plan on crossing the city twice. Santa Monica to South Pasadena is around twenty-five miles of city freeway. Pick a side.
• Two of the three are combined shops. A Stitch In Time and Abuelita's both carry knitting alongside needlepoint. That is worth knowing if you are expecting wall-to-wall canvases.
• Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.

FAQ

Which is the best shop for hand-painted canvases?

Aristeia, on range. It describes itself as Southern California's premier needlepoint shop and it stocks canvases from a long list of designers. The other two carry hand-painted canvases as well, alongside knitting.

Is there a needlepoint shop on the west side other than Santa Monica?

Not one we have been able to confirm. Aristeia on Wilshire is the west side shop.

What about the San Fernando Valley or Orange County?

There are shops in both that we have not been able to verify to our own standard yet, which is why they are not listed here. We would rather leave a gap than publish an address or a phone number we cannot stand behind. If you know one of them, tell us and we will check it properly.

Can I get to any of these without a car?

Abuelita's is the most realistic. It is in the Mission West district of South Pasadena, which the Metro A Line serves. The other two are much easier with a car.

Is there anywhere open late?

Aristeia on Mondays, until 8pm, which is the latest opening we have found anywhere in the Los Angeles basin. Abuelita's is the other option: 7pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 6pm on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
