Needlepoint Shops in Los Angeles

Eight shops: Le Fil on North Flores Street, near West Hollywood; Angel City Stitchery in Mar Vista; Aristeia on Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica; Needle Hearts on Ventura Boulevard in Tarzana; Eva's Needlework in Thousand Oaks; A Stitch In Time and Abuelita's, about three miles apart in San Marino and South Pasadena; and Garden Gate in Covina.

We can confirm eight needlepoint shops across Los Angeles, measured from City Hall. To the west, Le Fil is on North Flores Street, about seven and a half miles out; Angel City Stitchery is on Washington Boulevard in Mar Vista, about twelve miles out; and Aristeia is on Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica, about thirteen miles out and about three and a half miles from Angel City. Needle Hearts is on Ventura Boulevard in Tarzana, about nineteen miles northwest of City Hall and about ten miles from Aristeia. Further west, Eva's Needlework is in Thousand Oaks, about thirty-six miles from City Hall. To the northeast, A Stitch In Time on Huntington Drive in San Marino and Abuelita's on Mission Street in South Pasadena are about three miles apart, and Garden Gate is on North Citrus Avenue in Covina, about twenty miles east of City Hall and about twelve miles east of A Stitch In Time.

Le Fil, Angel City, and Aristeia are all open from Thursday to Saturday. Monday is the day the hours differ most: Aristeia stays open until 8pm, A Stitch In Time keeps its usual hours, Needle Hearts opens from 10am to 2pm, Le Fil opens by appointment only, and Abuelita's, Angel City, Eva's, and Garden Gate are closed.

Which one to go to

After work, go to Aristeia on a Monday, until 8pm, Abuelita's on a Wednesday or Thursday, until 7pm, or Angel City Stitchery on a Thursday, until 7pm.

On a Sunday, go to Le Fil or Angel City Stitchery, both from 10am to 4pm, or Abuelita's, from noon to 5pm. West of the city, Eva's Needlework opens on Sundays from 1pm to 4pm.

For a stitch club, go to A Stitch In Time, which runs several, each a series of canvases with stitch guides.

For knitting as well as needlepoint, go to Abuelita's, which gives one side of the shop to each and teaches both, with crochet too, or, in Thousand Oaks, to Eva's Needlework, which sells yarn alongside its canvases.

For a class series with your own project, go to Garden Gate, whose five-week needlepoint classes welcome every level.

For Judaic canvases, go to Needle Hearts, whose site sorts its canvases by subject, with Judaic designs and tallis bags among them.

Before you go

• Aristeia's entrance is on Berkeley Street. Its site gives the entrance and the parking there.
• Book Le Fil early in the week. From Monday to Wednesday it opens by appointment only, booked on its site. It publishes no phone number for the shop itself, only a New York number for questions, (646) 389-2860.
• Look for Angel City Stitchery between Walgrove and Glencoe. It is on Washington Boulevard, with street parking, by its own directions.
• Saturdays end at 4pm at Le Fil, Angel City, Aristeia, and A Stitch In Time. Garden Gate and Needle Hearts close at 2pm on Saturday, Eva's at 5pm, and Abuelita's stays open until 6pm.
• Call Needle Hearts before a Tuesday visit. Its site prints Tuesday's hours as "10:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.", so we have not printed them. Its number is (818) 344-6277.
• Call Garden Gate before planning a class. Its class schedule runs through the whole week, Sundays, Mondays, and a Wednesday evening included, although the shop's own hours are Tuesday to Saturday, and some classes meet only every other week.
• Abuelita's is by the Metro A Line. It is about 0.1 miles from South Pasadena station.
• Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.

Is there a needlepoint shop near West Hollywood or Beverly Hills?

Yes. Le Fil is on North Flores Street, about 0.8 miles south of the middle of West Hollywood and about two miles east of the middle of Beverly Hills.

What about Culver City or Marina del Rey?

Angel City Stitchery is the nearest to both, about three miles west of the middle of Culver City and about one mile north of the middle of Marina del Rey. Aristeia and Le Fil are both about five miles from the middle of Culver City, Aristeia to the northwest and Le Fil to the north.

Is there one near Pasadena?

Two. Abuelita's is about three and a half miles south of the middle of Pasadena, and A Stitch In Time about three and a half miles southeast.

Is there a shop near Thousand Oaks or Westlake Village?

Yes. Eva's Needlework is about one and a half miles southeast of the middle of Thousand Oaks and about three and a half miles northwest of the middle of Westlake Village.

What about Covina, West Covina, or Pomona?

Garden Gate is about 0.5 miles west of the middle of Covina, about two and a half miles northeast of the middle of West Covina, and about seven and a half miles west of the middle of Pomona.

What about the San Fernando Valley or Orange County?

Needle Hearts is on Ventura Boulevard in Tarzana, about nineteen miles northwest of City Hall. We know of shops in Orange County that we could not confirm from their own sites, so they are not listed here. If you know one of them, tell us and we will check it.

Can I learn here as a beginner?

Yes. Abuelita's welcomes beginners in any week, A Stitch In Time's decorative stitch classes can be started at any time, Le Fil holds beginner classes in its shop, and Angel City Stitchery gives private lessons and helps newcomers choose a first canvas and its threads. Garden Gate's classes welcome every level, Needle Hearts lists classes with three teachers, and Eva's Needlework gives free help in the shop with the project you are working on.

Aristeia and Le Fil list finishing among their services, Garden Gate's finishing is done by JRG Designs, its in-house finisher, Abuelita's offers help with finishing, and Angel City Stitchery will put you in touch with a finisher it works with.
