Needlepoint Shops in Phoenix and Scottsdale

Three shops across the valley, one of them open until 8pm on a Wednesday, which is rarer than it should be.

Phoenix and Scottsdale have three needlepoint shops between them, spread across the valley from north Scottsdale down to central Phoenix.

It is also, unexpectedly, an easy region to shop in if you work. One of the three opens seven days a week and stays open until 8pm on Wednesdays.

The one that opens late

Most needlepoint shops close by four or five in the afternoon, which is fine if you do not have a job and awkward if you do. Arizona has an answer.

Uptown Needlepoint in the Arizona Biltmore Circle complex runs to 8pm on Wednesdays for a Sip and Stitch evening, and opens on Sundays as well. It is the only shop in the region open seven days, and the only one with a regular late opening. If you work, Wednesday evening is the answer to this whole region.

Family Arts Needlework Shop on North 7th Street opens at 9:30am, half an hour earlier than anyone else here, and has a painter working on the premises alongside guest and in-house teachers. It is the morning shop.

BeStitched Needlepoint is up on Shea Boulevard in north Scottsdale, with a large painted canvas range and an events calendar that includes occasional late-night open stitching. Those are one-off events rather than standing hours, so check the site before counting on one.

Getting between them

Scottsdale to central Phoenix is a straightforward drive across the valley, and unlike Los Angeles it is genuinely doable in a morning. BeStitched and Family Arts both close at 4pm and both shut Sunday and Monday, so if you want two in a day, make it Tuesday to Saturday and start early at Family Arts.

The obvious pairing is Family Arts and Uptown Needlepoint. Both are in central Phoenix, a few minutes apart, and their hours overlap comfortably.

Before you go

• Sunday is Uptown alone. The other two are closed. It is also the only shop open on a Monday.
• Wednesday evening is the region's best slot. Uptown runs to 8pm, and neither of the other two keeps regular evening hours.
• Summer is real here. These are indoor errands in a place that spends months above 100 degrees. Morning trips are not just about the opening hours.

FAQ

What about Quail Run Needlework in Scottsdale?

It is a real shop and we wanted to include it. Its own website publishes a phone number and opening hours but no street address, and the three outside sources we checked give three different addresses on three different roads. It has evidently moved more than once and the listings have not caught up. We would rather leave it out than print one guess out of three. If you know where it is now, tell us and we will add it.

Is there anything in Tucson, Sedona, or Prescott?

Nothing we have been able to confirm. The three shops here are the ones we can stand behind in Arizona.

Which has the biggest canvas selection?

BeStitched on range of painted canvases, Family Arts on threads, where the wall is genuinely deep. Uptown is the most social of the three, built around classes and stitching events as much as retail.

Can I stitch with other people?

Yes, and this is a good region for it. Uptown runs Sip and Stitch on Wednesday evenings, and BeStitched holds open stitching sessions that it announces on its site.
