Needlepoint Shops in Rhode Island

Three shops in the smallest state, from Newport up to Barrington, none more than half an hour apart.

Rhode Island is the smallest state and it supports three needlepoint shops, which tells you something about the place. Newport, East Greenwich, and Barrington sit within half an hour of each other, so seeing every shop in a single day is comfortable rather than ambitious.

It also fills a gap. Our South Shore and South Coast page runs down to the Rhode Island line and stops, and Fairfield County picks up well to the west. This is the middle.

Two shops, one business

Lycette of Newport is half of a two-shop operation. The other half is in Palm Beach, and we have written that one up on our Palm Beach County page.

The pairing is less odd than it sounds. Newport and Palm Beach share a good deal of the same clientele at opposite ends of the year, and needlepoint has held on in both for the same reasons. If you stitch in one place in summer and the other in winter, that is a shop that follows you.

Making a day of it

Newport to East Greenwich is about half an hour up Route 1 and 4. East Greenwich to Barrington is about twenty-five minutes east around the bay. All three in one day is a genuinely pleasant drive rather than a slog.

The hours are the constraint, not the distance. The Picket Fence closes at 4pm and opens at 10:30am, so it wants to be the middle stop or the first. Lycette runs to 5pm and is the natural last one.

Before you go

• Thursday evening is the only late opening. Needlepoint by the Bay runs to 8pm, and nothing else in the state opens past five.
• Sunday is quieter than you would expect. Needlepoint by the Bay holds a free open stitch from 11am to 3pm, and Lycette opens Sundays in July and August.
• Nothing opens on a Monday. All three are closed. Needlepoint by the Bay is shut Tuesday as well, so Wednesday onward is the only window that covers all three.
• Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.

FAQ

Can I really see all three in one day?

Yes. The three are within about an hour of driving end to end. Start at Barrington when it opens at 10:30am and finish at Newport, which runs to 5pm. On a Thursday, reverse it and finish at East Greenwich instead, because that is the one evening any of them stays open to 8pm.

Is there a needlepoint shop in Providence?

Not one we have been able to confirm. Barrington is about fifteen minutes southeast of the city, and East Greenwich about twenty minutes south, so Providence is well covered even without a shop of its own.

Is the Newport Lycette the same as the Palm Beach one?

Yes, the same business with two storefronts. The range overlaps heavily, though each shop leans into its own setting. It is one of only a handful of needlepoint businesses in the country with more than one shop you can walk into.

Where can I stitch with other people?

Needlepoint by the Bay runs a free open stitch every Sunday from 11am to 3pm in East Greenwich. That is the easiest way into the local needlepoint community if you are new to it or new to the state.
