Needlepoint Shops on the South Shore and South Coast

Four shops between Hingham and Padanaram, and what each one is like to walk into.

The stretch of Massachusetts coast running south from Boston to the Rhode Island line is better served for needlepoint than most people expect. Four shops cover it, spread far enough apart that which one you visit mostly comes down to where you start from.

All four are proper needlepoint shops rather than general craft or yarn stores, which matters. They carry hand-painted canvases, they stock fibers in the range you actually need, and there is someone behind the counter who can tell you which thread suits your mesh.

What the region covers

The South Shore runs from Quincy and Braintree down through Hingham, Cohasset, Scituate, Norwell, Abington, Marshfield, and Duxbury to Plymouth. The South Coast picks up west of the canal, taking in Wareham, Marion, Mattapoisett, Fairhaven, New Bedford, Dartmouth, Westport, and Fall River.

Three of the four shops sit on the South Shore end, and only one is west of the canal. Hingham and Norwell are the coastal pair, Abington is the inland option, and Padanaram is the long drive if you are anywhere near New Bedford.

Between Plymouth and Wareham there is a gap with no dedicated needlepoint shop, so if you live in that stretch you are choosing between driving north or south and west to Padanaram. Neither is far, and both are worth the trip.

Stitchers further out on the Cape or on the islands are better served by the shops in Cape Cod and the Islands.

Before you go

• Call ahead. Needlepoint shops are small businesses with hours that shift seasonally, and a wasted drive is a miserable way to start a project.

• Ask about classes and stitching hours. Most shops run one or both, and open stitching is the cheapest lesson in the craft.
• Ask about finishing. Turning a stitched canvas into a pillow, a stocking, or a framed piece is specialist work, and shops either do it or know who does.

FAQ

Are there needlepoint shops in Plymouth or New Bedford?

Not dedicated ones at the moment. The nearest shops to Plymouth are in Norwell, Hingham, and Abington to the north. The nearest to New Bedford is Seagrass Studio in South Dartmouth, a short drive west, which traded as Village Needlepoint until recently.

Do these shops carry hand-painted canvases?

All four do. Hand-painted canvases usually do not come with thread, so expect to choose fibers separately, which is a good reason to buy the canvas in person rather than online.

Can I get a finished piece made into a pillow or stocking?

Ask the shop. Finishing is usually sent out to a specialist rather than done in-house, and shops keep relationships with finishers they trust. Seasonal work like Christmas stockings has cutoff dates well before the holidays.

Is a needlepoint shop different from a yarn shop?

Yes, and the distinction matters. A yarn shop serves knitting and crochet, and while some carry a little needlepoint, they rarely stock canvases or the fiber range a needlepoint project needs. All four shops listed here are needlepoint shops proper.
