Needlepoint Shops in Greater Boston
Three shops around the city, all of them the same business, and between them they cover Back Bay, MetroWest, and the northern suburbs.
Greater Boston has three needlepoint shops, and all three are the same business. Stitch Boutique runs a shop in Back Bay, one in Wellesley, and one in Winchester, which between them cover the city, the western suburbs, and the north.
That is less limiting than it sounds. The three keep different hours and sit in genuinely different places, so in practice you pick the one that fits your day rather than the one that has what you want.
Boston
Stitch Boutique, Boston
715 Boylston Street, Suite 410, Boston, MA 02116
(617) 236-4633
Monday and Tuesday 11am to 4pm, Wednesday 11am to 7:30pm, Thursday to Saturday 11am to 4pm
stitchboutique.com
The city shop, on Boylston Street in Back Bay a short walk from the Public Garden. Hand-painted canvases, threads, classes, and finishing.
It is Suite 410, so this is an upstairs shop in an office building rather than a street-level storefront. Wednesday runs to 7:30pm and is the only evening opening any of the three keeps.
Wellesley
Stitch Boutique, Wellesley
22 Grove Street, Wellesley, MA 02482
(781) 235-2477
Monday to Saturday 10am to 3pm
stitchboutique.com
The MetroWest shop, on Grove Street in Wellesley village. The widest opening of the three: six days a week, though it closes at 3pm.
This was The Wellesley Needlepoint Collection for years. It was sold in 2022 to the owner of the Stitch Boutique shops and now trades under that name, so older listings and the odd search result still use the old one.
Winchester
Stitch Boutique, Winchester
47A Church Street, Winchester, MA 01890
(781) 721-1929
Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 3pm
stitchboutique.com
The shop north of the city, on Church Street in Winchester center. Closed Mondays, otherwise the same 10am to 3pm as Wellesley.
The most convenient of the three if you are coming from the north shore or up the 93, and the only one of the three with easy parking.
One business, three shops
Boston is a large city with a long stitching tradition, and yet the shops you can walk into all belong to one owner.
Part of that is recent. The Wellesley shop traded for years as The Wellesley Needlepoint Collection and was sold in 2022 to the owner of the Stitch Boutique shops. It kept its address and its stock and changed its sign, which is why older listings, and a fair number of search results, still use the previous name.
If you are used to comparing two shops across town, adjust your expectations. What you get instead is three doors into the same inventory, which is genuinely useful when one of them is closed.
Which one to go to
Boston is the one to pick if you are already in town. It is on Boylston Street in Back Bay, a short walk from the Public Garden, and it is the only one of the three that stays open into the evening: Wednesday runs to 7:30pm. Note that it is Suite 410, so it is upstairs in an office building rather than a shop you will spot from the sidewalk.
Wellesley is the one to catch on a Monday morning. It runs Monday to Saturday and opens at 10am, an hour before the city shop, and Winchester is shut Mondays altogether. It closes at 3pm, so it wants to be a morning or lunchtime visit rather than an afternoon one.
Winchester is the easiest to drive to and park at, and it is the obvious choice from the north shore or off Route 93. Closed Mondays, otherwise the same 10am to 3pm as Wellesley.
Before you go
- Everything closes early. Two of the three shut at 3pm and the city shop at 4pm. Only Wednesday in Boston runs past five. This is a region to visit in the morning.
- Check which one is open before you set off. Wellesley opens Mondays, Winchester does not, and the Boston hours are different again. The three do not share a schedule.
- The Boston shop is upstairs. Suite 410 at 715 Boylston Street. Go in and go up rather than walking the block looking for a window.
- Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.
FAQ
Is there really only one needlepoint business in Boston?
One that you can walk into, yes. Stitch Boutique operates all three shops in this region. There is more within an hour of the city, but it is south of it rather than in it.
What happened to the Wellesley Needlepoint Collection?
It was sold in 2022 to the owner of the Stitch Boutique shops and now trades under that name at the same address on Grove Street. If you have been going there for years, it is the same shop.
Where else can I go near Boston?
South, mostly. Our South Shore and South Coast page covers four shops between Hingham and South Dartmouth, and the nearest of those is well under an hour from the city on a good day.
Is there anything on the north shore or out toward Concord?
Not that we have been able to confirm. Winchester is the closest shop to both. There are businesses in the area that paint canvases or sell them online, but we only list shops you can walk into.
Can I see all three in a day?
You can, because the distances are small. The constraint is the hours rather than the driving: with two of them closing at 3pm you would want to start early and leave Boston until last on a Wednesday.
New to needlepoint?
If you are heading to one of these shops for the first time, it helps to know roughly what you are looking at before you walk in.
- How to start needlepoint, for what a first kit actually needs to contain.
- Mesh count explained, for the number on every canvas label.
- Thread types, for the wool, cotton, and silk question.
- Finishing, for what happens after the stitching is done and what it costs.
