Needlepoint Shops in New Orleans

Two shops, one in the French Quarter open every day and one out on Canal Boulevard.

New Orleans has one shop you can walk to and one you should drive to. The Quarter Stitch has been on Chartres Street since 1969 and opens every single day, ten to six, which almost nothing else in this trade manages anywhere.

The other, Needle Arts Studio, is out on Canal Boulevard in Lakeview, six days a week and far easier to park at. Both carry needlepoint alongside yarn, which is common in this city and not a problem as long as you know what you are walking into.

The local canvases are the point

What makes New Orleans worth a shop visit rather than an online order is the design work. Both shops carry canvases drawn from the city, much of it designed in house or by local artists: Mardi Gras, streetcars, ironwork, alligators, and the rest.

You will not find that range anywhere else, and it makes a far better souvenir than most, since you finish it yourself. If you are visiting rather than living here, this is the thing to buy.

A note on yarn

Both shops sell knitting yarn as well as needlepoint canvases. That is normal in New Orleans and does not make them yarn shops in the sense our other pages warn about, because both genuinely stock hand-painted canvases and the fibers a needlepoint project needs.

It does mean the needlepoint is a section rather than the whole shop, so ask where the canvases are rather than assuming. Our guide to needlepoint and its neighboring crafts covers what separates them.

Before you go

• The Quarter Stitch is open daily. Ten to six, seven days, which makes it the only one of the two open on a Sunday.
• Drive to Lakeview, walk to the Quarter. Parking in the French Quarter is its own problem. Canal Boulevard is straightforward.
• Ask for the New Orleans canvases specifically. They are the reason to come, and at the Quarter Stitch many are designed in the shop.
• Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.

FAQ

Is there a needlepoint shop in Metairie or on the North Shore?

Not one we have been able to confirm as needlepoint proper. Needle Arts Studio on Canal Boulevard is the closest to Metairie, about fifteen minutes east.

Which is better for a visitor?

The Quarter Stitch, easily. It is walkable from anywhere in the French Quarter, it opens every day including Sundays, and the local canvas range is the strongest reason to go.

Are these yarn shops or needlepoint shops?

Both, genuinely. They carry hand-painted needlepoint canvases and the fibers to work them, alongside knitting yarn. That is a different thing from a yarn shop with a needlepoint shelf.

Can I get finishing done in New Orleans?
