Needlepoint Shops in Atlanta

Two full-service shops, one in the city and one just north of it.

Atlanta has fewer needlepoint shops than a city its size suggests, but the two it has are both proper full-service shops rather than craft stores with a needlepoint shelf. Between them they cover the city and the northern suburbs.

They also divide the week neatly. One opens six days, the other opens late on a Thursday, and between them there is a way into a shop whatever your working hours look like.

This is the thing worth knowing about Atlanta, and it is not true everywhere. Both shops write custom stitch guides, which is a written plan for a specific hand-painted canvas saying which stitch and which thread go where.

Hand-painted canvases arrive with no instructions at all. A guide is the difference between a canvas you finish and one that sits in a bag, and it is the single most useful thing to ask for when you buy one. Ask before you pay rather than after.

Which one to go to

Labors of Love Needlepoint is on Plasamour Drive, southeast of Buckhead, and it is the easier of the two to fit around a job: Monday to Saturday, six days a week, which is generous for this trade. Canvases, threads, accessories, custom painting, guides and classes.

The Nimble Needle is up in Sandy Springs, and Thursday is its day. It runs to 7pm, the only evening opening in the region, against a 3:30pm close the rest of the week. Fine canvases, threads, books and gifts, with classes at every level, painting services and trunk shows.

The two are roughly twenty minutes apart on a good day and rather longer at rush hour, which in Atlanta covers more of the day than anyone would like. Both in one trip is comfortable on a Saturday morning.

Before you go

• Use the Plasamour Drive address. Older listings still show Labors of Love on Amsterdam Avenue. The shop has moved, and a satnav following the old entry will take you to the wrong place.
• Thursday is the late one. The Nimble Needle runs to 7pm. Nothing else in the region opens past four.
• Neither opens on a Sunday, and The Nimble Needle is closed Mondays as well.
• Ask about trunk shows. Both run them, and a trunk show is the best chance to see a painter's full range in person rather than as thumbnails on a screen.
• Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.

Is there a needlepoint shop in Buckhead?

Not a dedicated one that we can confirm. Labors of Love on Plasamour Drive is the closest, a short drive southeast, and The Nimble Needle is a similar distance north in Sandy Springs.

What is a custom stitch guide, and do I need one?

A written plan for a specific hand-painted canvas, saying which stitch and which thread to use in each area. You do not strictly need one, but on a first hand-painted canvas it is the difference between a project and a stalled project. Both Atlanta shops write them.

Do Atlanta shops offer classes for beginners?

Both do, at every level. Classes are the fastest way past the awkward first hours of a new craft, and they are often cheap or free with a canvas purchase.

Can I get to either without a car?

Not easily. Both are set up for people arriving by car, and Sandy Springs in particular is a drive. Atlanta is not a city where this is a surprise.
