Needlepoint Shops in Birmingham
Two shops over the mountain, plus a finishing workroom that takes canvases from anywhere.
Birmingham keeps its needlepoint over the mountain. Both shops are south of the city, one in Vestavia Hills and one out at Mt Laurel off Highway 280, and neither is downtown.
There is also a third business here that is not a shop at all, and it is worth knowing about: a dedicated finishing workroom that takes canvases from stitchers well beyond Alabama. Details on that below.
Vestavia Hills
Magic City Needlepoint
2531 Rocky Ridge Road, Suite 121, Vestavia Hills, AL 35243
(205) 721-7277
magiccityneedlepoint.com
Hand-painted canvases, a broad fiber range, accessories, classes, and trunk shows, in a boutique on Rocky Ridge Road over the mountain from the city. It calls itself Birmingham's needlepoint shop and on the retail side that is fair.
Hours are not published on their site, so call before you drive out.
Highway 280
The Southern Stitch Needlepoint
46 Manning Place, Birmingham, AL 35242
Tuesday 3pm to 8pm, Wednesday to Saturday 10am to 3pm
thesouthernstitchneedlepoint.com
The newer of the two, out at Mt Laurel off Highway 280, stocking 13 and 18 mesh canvases, accessories, and digital charts. Most of the canvases are hand-painted by working artists.
The Tuesday evening opening, 3pm to 8pm, is the only one we know of in the region. No phone is published, so use hello@thesouthernstitchneedlepoint.com.
Where to send a finished canvas
Needleworks is a finishing workroom rather than a shop you browse. There are no canvases to buy and no counter to stand at, but if you have stitched something and want it turned into a pillow, an ornament, or a framed piece, this is the local answer.
- Address. 2809 Crescent Avenue, Suite 8, Birmingham, AL 35209
- Phone. (205) 870-5191, or shop@gritsneedlepoint.com
- Open. Mondays and Thursdays, 10am to 1pm, for pick-up and drop-off only
- Website. gritsneedlepoint.com, which does not match the name and is easy to miss in a search
Six hours a week is a narrow window, so plan the drop-off rather than passing by. Fill in their finishing form and send it with the canvas. Our finishing guide covers what to expect on cost and timing, and the one thing never to do to a canvas before handing it over.
Before you go
- Call Magic City first. They do not publish hours on their site, and Rocky Ridge Road is a drive from most of the city.
- Tuesday evening is the one late opening. The Southern Stitch runs 3pm to 8pm on Tuesdays, which is the only evening opening we know of in the region.
- The two shops are not close together. Vestavia Hills and Mt Laurel are about twenty minutes apart, so treat them as separate trips unless you are already on 280.
- Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.
FAQ
Is there a needlepoint shop in downtown Birmingham or Homewood?
Not a retail one. The finishing workroom is in Homewood, and both shops that sell canvases are further south, in Vestavia Hills and out at Mt Laurel.
Which is easier to get to?
Magic City in Vestavia Hills if you are coming from the city or the west. The Southern Stitch if you are anywhere on Highway 280 or out toward Chelsea.
Can I buy canvases at Needleworks?
No. It is a finishing workroom, open six hours a week for drop-off and collection. For canvases, go to one of the two shops above.
Is there a shop in Huntsville, Montgomery, or Mobile?
Not that we have written up yet. If you know one, tell us and we will check it.
New to needlepoint?
If you are heading to one of these shops for the first time, it helps to know roughly what you are looking at before you walk in.
- How to start needlepoint, for what a first kit actually needs to contain.
- Mesh count explained, for the number on every canvas label.
- Thread types, for the wool, cotton, and silk question.
- Finishing, for what happens after the stitching is done and what it costs.
Elsewhere in the South? We have also written up Atlanta and Nashville, or search the map for anywhere else.
