The eight Philadelphia shops on this page run from Center City out along the Main Line to Malvern, north to Newtown, and across the Delaware. Rittenhouse Needlepoint is on Arch Street, about 0.3 miles east of City Hall. Out along the Main Line, Needle Me in Havertown is about eight miles to the west; Creative Way Needlepoint and Greystone Needlepoint, about 0.3 miles apart in Bryn Mawr, are about nine and a half and ten miles to the northwest; and Stitch Haus in Wayne and Fireside Stitchery in Malvern are about thirteen miles northwest and twenty-one miles west. Rose Cottage Needlepoint Studio is about twenty-two miles northeast, in Newtown, and The Nimble Needle is about six miles east, in Merchantville, New Jersey.

Out west, Needle Me is about two and a half miles from the two Bryn Mawr shops, and Stitch Haus is about three and a half miles on from Greystone, so those four make one trip; Fireside is about eight miles past Stitch Haus. Rittenhouse is the one of the eight that opens on Sundays without an appointment, and on Mondays only Rittenhouse, Stitch Haus, and Rose Cottage open.

Which one to go to

On a Sunday, go to Rittenhouse Needlepoint, open seven days a week. On a Monday, Rittenhouse or, on the Main Line, Stitch Haus, or, in Newtown, Rose Cottage.

After work, Rittenhouse again, open until 6pm from Monday to Saturday, or Rose Cottage on a Thursday, when it reopens from 6:30pm to 9pm for Sit & Stitch. The others close by 5pm.

For finishing, Rittenhouse has its own finishing team and takes drop-offs without an appointment, Needle Me finishes and frames in Havertown, Ricki finishes pieces at Creative Way Needlepoint in Bryn Mawr, and Fireside Stitchery finishes in Malvern.

For a canvas stitched for you, Stitch Haus, which will stitch one to order. It also has its own monogram studio, for clothing, accessories, and gifts.

For a canvas painted to order, Creative Way Needlepoint, where Hank has painted custom canvases since 1989.

If you are starting out, Greystone sells beginner kits and runs beginner classes, some in the morning and some in the evening; Stitch Haus gives private and group lessons for every level; Creative Way Needlepoint books formal lessons with Hank or Ricki by phone; and Fireside Stitchery teaches a beginner class by appointment, with the canvas and threads included.

If you also do counted thread or crewel, The Nimble Needle carries both alongside its needlepoint, and Rose Cottage sells supplies for cross-stitch, embroidery, crewel, hardanger, and beading, with four tables where anyone can stitch while it is open.

Before you go

• Needle Me and Greystone keep short days. Needle Me runs from 11am to 3pm and Greystone closes by 4pm, so neither suits an evening. Fireside also closes at 4pm on weekdays and 3pm on Saturdays.
• Call Creative Way before you go. Its website was last changed in 2019, so confirm that its Tuesday to Saturday hours still stand.
• Four of the shops out west are near a station. Stitch Haus is about 0.2 miles from Wayne station; Creative Way and Greystone are about 0.2 and 0.5 miles from Bryn Mawr station, where Creative Way's site starts its directions by train; and Fireside is about a mile from Malvern station, the one its site mentions.
• Park behind the wine store for Rose Cottage. Its site says to park at the Newtown Wine & Spirits store; the studio is behind the Curves building, next to John's Barber Shop. It is closed on Saturdays and opens on Sundays by appointment only.
• The Nimble Needle opens at noon from Tuesday to Friday, and will open in the morning or after hours by appointment.
• Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.

Can I get finishing done in the city?

Yes. Rittenhouse Needlepoint's own team finishes pieces, and it takes drop-offs at 1216 Arch Street without an appointment. Read our finishing guide first so you know what to ask and what it costs.

Is there a shop on the Main Line?

Yes. Two are in Bryn Mawr: Creative Way Needlepoint, about 0.2 miles from the middle of the town, and Greystone Needlepoint, about 0.5 miles from it and about one and a half miles from the middle of Villanova. Stitch Haus is in Wayne, about 0.4 miles from the middle of Wayne, and Fireside Stitchery is in Malvern, about a mile from the middle of the borough. Needle Me is in Havertown, about one and a half miles southwest of the middle of Ardmore.

Is there one near Paoli, Berwyn, King of Prussia, or West Chester?

Fireside Stitchery is the nearest we list to Paoli, about two and a half miles west of the middle of Paoli, and to West Chester, about seven miles northeast of the middle of the borough. Stitch Haus is the nearest to Berwyn, about three miles east of the middle of Berwyn, and to King of Prussia, about three and a half miles south of the middle of King of Prussia.

Is there a shop in Bucks County?

Yes. Rose Cottage Needlepoint Studio is in Newtown, about 0.3 miles west of the middle of the borough, about five and a half miles west of the middle of Yardley, and about twelve miles southeast of the middle of Doylestown.

Is there a needlepoint shop in Lancaster?

Can I learn here as a beginner?

Yes. Greystone runs beginner classes and sells beginner kits with a how-to guide, Stitch Haus gives private and group lessons for every level, and Needle Me offers one-on-one help in the shop. Fireside Stitchery teaches a beginner class, by appointment, on most Saturdays from 1:30pm to 3pm and on Thursdays from 10am to 11:30am, with a painted canvas, threads, and scissors included. Rose Cottage runs single-session make-and-take classes and a monthly needlepoint series, Stitches of the Month, and Amy gives private lessons there. Is there a needlepoint shop in Cherry Hill or South Jersey?
