Needlepoint Shops in Hawaii

One shop in the whole state, on South King Street in Honolulu, and it is worth knowing about before you fly.

Hawaii has one needlepoint shop. Needlepoint, etc. has been on South King Street in Honolulu for over twenty years, and as far as we can establish it is the only shop in the state where you can walk in and buy a hand-painted canvas.

That makes this a short page, and a useful one. If you are flying out with a project, or you get there and wish you had, this is the address.

Worth going for the canvases

It would be easy to treat a single shop on an island as a fallback. It is not. The reason to go is the range of Hawaiian and tropical canvases, which is genuinely local and not something you will find in a shop on the mainland.

Alongside those it carries Christmas and Asian-inspired designs, threads and fibers, and cross stitch and embroidery supplies. It finishes work into pillows, purses and belts, and it teaches.

The hours are the catch

Four hours a day, Tuesday to Friday, noon to 4pm. Saturday is 11am to 3pm. Closed Sunday and Monday.

That is a narrow window, and it is narrow in the middle of the day, which is exactly when a holiday tends to have something else in it. Build the day around the shop rather than hoping to drop in. On a week's trip there are only five opportunities.

Before you go

• Call ahead, genuinely. With a single shop on an island, there is no second option if the hours have changed.
• It is closed Sunday and Monday. Two of the seven days are out before you start.
• Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.
• Think about the flight home. Scissors are the usual problem. Check the current rules rather than assuming, and consider posting a finished piece rather than carrying it.

FAQ

Is there really only one needlepoint shop in Hawaii?

One that we can confirm, yes. We looked at Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. If you know of another, tell us and we will check it.

What about Kapaia Stitchery on Kauai?

We looked at it and decided against listing it. Several directories and reviews say it carries Hawaii-themed needlepoint canvases, but its own website describes a quilting fabric store and does not mention needlepoint at all. It may well have a canvas or two. It is not a needlepoint shop, and we would rather say so than pad the page.

Can I get needlepoint supplies on Maui or the Big Island?

Not from a dedicated shop that we have been able to confirm. Honolulu is the answer for the state, which means a flight from the neighbor islands.

Is it near Waikiki?

Not far. South King Street runs west of downtown Honolulu, so it is a short drive or a bus ride rather than a walk from the hotels.
