Needlepoint Shops in Houston

Nine shops, five of them inside the Loop, one on Del Monte Drive, two north in Spring and The Woodlands, and one southeast in Friendswood.

Five of Houston's nine needlepoint shops are inside the 610 Loop: Needle House and Stitches in Time, at 2422 and 2421 Tangley Street, The Courtly Canvas on West Alabama Street, Chandail Needlework on Mid Lane, and Howdy Honey Needlepoint on West 18th Street. Each is about four or five miles from downtown, and all five are within about six miles of one another. Nimblefingers is on Del Monte Drive, about eight miles west of downtown and about three miles west of Chandail. The other three are farther out: Storyteller's Thread in Old Town Spring, about twenty-two miles north of downtown; Studio 3113 in The Woodlands, about twenty-eight miles north; and The Petite Poppy Stitch House in Friendswood, about nineteen miles southeast.

For an evening visit, Howdy Honey is open until 7pm every weekday, and Chandail, The Courtly Canvas, and Storyteller's Thread each have one late day.

Which one to go to

On a Sunday, go to Howdy Honey, Storyteller's Thread, or The Petite Poppy Stitch House. Five of the others are closed, and Studio 3113 publishes no hours.

After work, Howdy Honey on any weekday until 7pm, Chandail on Mondays until 8pm, The Courtly Canvas on Wednesdays until 8pm, or Storyteller's Thread on Fridays until 7pm.

For several shops in one trip, The Courtly Canvas and Chandail are about 0.9 miles apart, and Needle House and Stitches in Time, one stop on Tangley Street, are under two miles from The Courtly Canvas. North of the city, Storyteller's Thread and Studio 3113 are under six miles apart.

For knitting as well as needlepoint, go to Nimblefingers, a needlepoint and knitting shop.

If you stitch cross stitch or embroidery as well, Storyteller's Thread or The Petite Poppy Stitch House, which carry both.

Before you go

• Check Storyteller's Thread's Instagram before the drive. Its site says the latest hours are posted there.
• Allow for Chandail's Wednesday break. It closes from noon to 2pm for a class.
• Go to Stitches in Time before noon on a Tuesday or Saturday. It closes at noon on both days, by its Facebook page, which says its hours were last updated about three years ago, so call (713) 975-9778 first.
• Call Studio 3113 before you go. It publishes no hours on its site; its number is (713) 887-3970.
• Bring the canvas if you have one. Thread and mesh have to be matched to the specific canvas, and nobody can do that from a photograph. See our thread guide for what that pairing involves.

FAQ

Can I learn here as a beginner?

Yes. The Courtly Canvas and Storyteller's Thread both run beginner classes, and Needle House, Chandail, Howdy Honey, The Petite Poppy Stitch House, and Studio 3113 all list classes on their sites.

Is there a needlepoint shop in The Woodlands or Conroe?

In The Woodlands, yes. Studio 3113 is on Woodstead Court, about three miles southeast of the middle of The Woodlands; it publishes no hours, so call before you go. Storyteller's Thread in Old Town Spring is about eight and a half miles southeast of the middle of The Woodlands. We know of no shop we can confirm in Conroe; Studio 3113 is about twelve miles south of the middle of Conroe.

What about Katy or Sugar Land?

Not one we have been able to confirm. Sookie's Needlepoint in Katy gives its address on its own Instagram but no weekly hours, so we have not listed it yet. From Katy or Sugar Land, the nearest we list is Nimblefingers on Del Monte Drive, about twenty-one miles east of the middle of Katy and about thirteen miles northeast of the middle of Sugar Land.

Is there a needlepoint shop near Pearland?

The Petite Poppy Stitch House in Friendswood is about seven and a half miles east of the middle of Pearland.
