Needlepoint Shops in Houston

Three shops, from Rice Village north to Spring, and a fourth we are still checking.

Houston is the other half of the Texas needlepoint story. Our Dallas and Fort Worth page covers the Metroplex, and the shops down here are just as serious about it. One short block in Rice Village has two needlepoint shops facing each other across the street, which is not something many cities can claim.

The three below run from inside the Loop out to Spring, roughly half an hour north of downtown. Two of them sit a few minutes apart in the city. The third is far enough out that it is worth the drive mainly if you are already north of Beltway 8.

Inside the Loop

Needle House

2422 Tangley Street, Houston, TX 77005
(713) 522-9704
theneedlehouse.com

Canvases, fibers, and a class program built around named teachers rather than a general timetable. It sits in Rice Village, on the same short block as a second needlepoint shop, which is a rare thing in any city.

Hours are not published on their site, so call before you go. The shop is easy to pair with anything else you have in the Village.

The Courtly Canvas

3637 West Alabama Street, Suite 320, Houston, TX 77027
(713) 485-0351
Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm, with Wednesday until 8pm, and Saturday 10am to 3pm
thecourtlycanvas.com

A curated canvas and thread selection with a strong community side, a few minutes east of Rice Village off West Alabama. The Wednesday evening opening runs to 8pm, which is the one to plan around if you work days.

Being on the third floor, it is a suite rather than a storefront window, so look for the building number rather than the sign.

Spring

Storyteller's Thread

209 Midway Street, Spring, TX 77373
(832) 302-9348
Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm, Saturday 10am to 5pm, Sunday 12pm to 5pm
storytellersthread.com

Needlepoint first, with cross stitch and hand embroidery alongside it, and a leaning toward books and fantasy in the canvas range that you will not find in a traditional shop. Beginner classes and events run regularly.

The only Houston shop we list that opens on a Sunday, and the hours are unusual all week, so read them before you drive. They invite you to text rather than call, and a second number appears in their footer.

Also worth knowing

Stitches in Time sits at 2421 Tangley Street, directly across from Needle House, and has been trading in Houston since the 1990s. We have not listed it above because its website is currently returning an error, and the suite number differs between the listings we can find.

It is plainly a real shop, and the two of them together make that block the best needlepoint stop in the city. We would rather leave it out for now than publish a suite number we cannot check. If you know it, tell us and it goes straight on the page.

FAQ

Which Houston shop is best for a beginner?

Any of the three will set you up, and all of them run classes. If you are starting from nothing, go where you can spend time at the counter, and go on a weekday when the shop is quiet rather than on a Saturday.

Are there really two needlepoint shops on the same block?

Yes, on Tangley Street in Rice Village, at 2421 and 2422. They have been neighbors for years.

Is there a needlepoint shop in The Woodlands, Katy, or Sugar Land?

Not that we have been able to confirm. Storyteller's Thread in Spring is the closest to the northern suburbs, and the two city shops are the nearest to Katy and Sugar Land.

What is Storyteller's Thread like compared to the others?

It leans toward books and fantasy in its canvas range, and it carries cross stitch and hand embroidery alongside needlepoint. That makes it the least traditional of the three, and the most interesting if you are tired of florals and monograms.

New to needlepoint?

If you are heading to one of these shops for the first time, it helps to know roughly what you are looking at before you walk in.
