Detroit's needlepoint shops are in the suburbs. Two are half a mile apart on Mack Avenue in Grosse Pointe Woods, about ten miles northeast of downtown, and The Needleworks is in Birmingham, about seventeen miles northwest.
The two Grosse Pointe shops make one easy trip. Birmingham is a separate outing, and its hours are the ones to check first.

Canvases, threads, and self-finishing pieces, with finishing, custom designs, classes, and trunk shows. It is on Mack Avenue now; older listings still give a Fisher Road address.
The shop does not publish its opening hours on its site, so call before you go. Parking is metered on Mack Avenue, and there is no customer parking behind the shop.

It calls itself southeastern Michigan's largest needlepoint store, in business since 1978, with canvases, fibers, books, and classes, including a stitch lab.
Closed on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, so check the day before you drive.
Which one to go to
On a Tuesday or a Friday, go to The Knotted Needle, which is open Tuesday to Saturday. The Needleworks is closed on both of those days.
If you are on the east side, see both Grosse Pointe shops together: they are a few minutes apart on the same road. Call The Wool & The Floss first, since it does not publish its hours.
If you are north or west of the city, The Needleworks in Birmingham is the nearer, open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
Before you go
- Parking differs. The Knotted Needle has free parking behind the shop. At The Wool & The Floss it is metered street parking on Mack Avenue.
- Afternoons are short. The Knotted Needle and The Needleworks both close by 4pm, and The Needleworks by 2pm on Saturdays.
